The Roland SPD-20 PRO is a digital percussion pad, a modern and enhanced version of the classic SPD-20. It’s designed for live performance and studio use, with a focus on a massive library of sounds, robust build quality, and expanded connectivity.
Key Features and Specifications
- Pads: It features the familiar eight-pad layout of the original SPD-20. The pads are velocity-sensitive and made of cushioned rubber, offering a natural feel and accurate triggering.
- Sounds: The SPD-20 PRO includes a massive library of over 900 instruments. This includes every sound from the original SPD-20, plus a wide selection of new, high-quality sounds for world percussion (from Asian, African, and Latin styles) and modern drum kit sounds taken from Roland’s premium TD-27 V-Drums module.
- Kits: The unit comes with 200 kits, with 100 of them as ready-to-play presets. The other 100 are user-customizable, and you can overwrite the preset kits as well.
- Effects and Editing:
- It features three independent effects engines with 38 multi-effects types each.
- Onboard EQ and compression can be applied to individual pads.
- The “Pad Link” function allows you to layer multiple sounds on a single pad.
- Real-time sound editing is possible via the backlit LCD and direct-access buttons.
- Connectivity and Expansion:
- External Trigger Inputs: It has four dual-trigger inputs and a dedicated hi-hat control input, allowing you to connect additional pads, cymbals, kick triggers, or hi-hat pedals to create a full mini drum kit setup.
- MIDI I/O: MIDI In and Out ports for connecting to other MIDI gear.
- USB Memory Port: For storing kits and setups on a USB drive.
- Standard 1/4″ phone jacks for phones, main output (L/MONO, R), and mix-in.
- Design: It retains the compact, briefcase-sized form factor of the original, with a durable, road-ready all-metal chassis.
